San Luis Lakes State Park
The combination of wetlands, lakes and dry valley floor environments provides a fantastic wildlife viewing and recreation area. Migratory waterfowl and other birds are frequent visitors to these tranquil waters. Coyotes, kangaroo rats, rabbits, elk, songbirds, raptors, reptiles, and amphibians all find refuge in this unlikely riparian oasis hidden in the low dunes of the eastern San Luis Valley.

There is fishing for rainbow trout in San Luis Lakes year round. Hunting of waterfowl and small game is permitted in the wildlife area north of San Luis Lake in season. Water skiing, motor boating, personal watercraft, fishing, sailing, windsurfing and swimming continue to be popular activities.


La Jara Reservoir


La Jara Reservior is truly an mountain paradise. Fishing is available year round, except for hunting season, on the lake and also three coldwater streams. The hunter's dream, La Jara Reservior is open to deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, black bear, mountain lion and small game hunting. Boat Ramp is available.

 

Mountain Home Reservoir

Mountain Home Reservior is east of Ft. Garland. This coldwater lake is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. With activities ranging from fishing to wildlife observation, Mountain Home Reservior lives up to its name...Home! Boating is permitted and boat ramp is available. Water skiing is prohibited.

 

Platoro Reservoir

Platoro Dam and Reservoir are part of the San Luis Valley Project in the south-central portion of the State of Colorado. Platoro Dam is on the Conejos River about 1 mile above the town of Platoro, Colorado. The Dam stores floodwaters of the Conejos River, a tributary of the Rio Grande, for release when the normal flow falls below irrigation requirements. Recreation at Platoro Reservoir is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service, Rio Grande National Forest. The Forest Service can be reached at (719) 274-8971. In the town of Platoro, Colorado lodging, groceries, restaurants, and other amenities can be found. The dam was completed in 1951 and regulates the water supply for 81,000 acres of land irrigated by the Conejos Water Conservancy District. The reservoir is located in a high mountain valley with broad vistas of the San Juan Mountains. A wilderness area is located to the south of the reservoir area. Since the recreation season is short and the location remote, use is low to moderate.

 

Sanchez Reservoir

Just east of San Luis, Sanchez Reservior offers anglers the chance to cast a line into the crystal clear warmwater lake. Sanchez Reservior also includes a boat ramp for fishermen who want to try their luck in deeper waters. Camping and hunting is prohibited. Water skiing is also prohibited.

Smith Reservoir

Located near Blanca, Smith Reservior is perfect for the angler at heart. This reservior is a coldwater lake and is open to fisherman year round except during hunting seasons. For the hunter, Smith Reservior houses a variety of waterfowl and hunting is permitted only in season. Boat ramp and trailer dump station is available on site.
